Ā FROM ABSORBING TO CHANNELING: WHY EMPATH NEED A PRACTICE, NOT JUST AWARENESS

From Absorbing to Channeling
Why being an empath was never the problem
If you've read anything I've written before, you already know the feeling I'm talking about. You walk into a room and you know exactly what everyone in it is carrying before a single word is spoken. You leave a conversation more tired than the other person, even though you didn't say much. You cry at things that aren't yours to cry about, because somewhere along the way you stopped being able to tell the difference between your feelings and everyone else's.
I've called this being an empath. I've called it being an old soul. Lately I've been calling it something simpler: an open channel with no dial on it.
Absorbing vs. channeling
Most of us who feel this way were never taught that there's a difference between absorbing energy and channeling it.
Absorbing is passive. It happens to you. You walk through the world like a sponge, and by the end of the day you're wrung out, holding grief that started in someone else's body, carrying anxiety you picked up on the train.
Channeling is active. It's a direction, not a leak. Energy still moves through you, but you're the one deciding where it goes and what it becomes on the way out.
The difference between those two states isn't sensitivity. You already have the sensitivity, that part was never in question. The difference is a practice.
Sensitivity was never the problem
This is the piece I didn't fully understand for years, and it's the piece nobody hands you along with "you're just very empathic." Being told you're sensitive doesn't give you anywhere to put it. It just names the exhaustion. What actually changes things is learning to work with energy on purpose, instead of being worked on by it.
Reiki was one place I found that dial. Not because it made me less sensitive, I don't think that part of me is going anywhere, and I've stopped wanting it to. It gave me a structure. A way to open, direct, and close, instead of just staying open all the time and calling it intuition. The hands-on techniques matter less than the underlying shift: you go from being a receiver by default to being a practitioner by choice.
What I see in my students
I see this constantly in the people who come through my Reiki I trainings. They arrive describing exactly what I described above, the overwhelm, the porousness, the sense of carrying too much that isn't theirs. And what changes for them isn't that the world gets quieter. It's that they stop being at its mercy.
They learn to ground before they open. They learn to close consciously instead of just collapsing into sleep at the end of the day. They learn that their sensitivity was never the problem, it was always the raw material for something they hadn't been shown how to use yet.
If this is you
If any of this is landing for you, I want to say directly: this is what Reiki Level 1 is for. Not as a title, not as another thing to add to a bio, but as the actual mechanics of turning absorption into direction. It's the training I wish someone had put in front of me years before I found it myself.
I'm opening a new Reiki Level 1 cohort on September 13. It's small, it's hands-on, and it's built for exactly the kind of person reading this right now, the one who has spent a long time feeling everything and is ready to learn what to do with that.
If you've been circling this for a while, consider this your nudge.
